Permission Granted: You Don't Have to Be Creative Today

Published on: 11th March, 2026

Creativity has its seasons, and that’s the main takeaway we’re diving into today. It’s perfectly okay if you’re not feeling creative right now; we’ve all been there. As creators, whether we’re making podcasts, art, or any kind of content, we often put pressure on ourselves to be constantly producing new ideas. But sometimes, the well runs dry, and that’s when self-judgment creeps in, leading us to think we’re slacking off. Instead, we should embrace those quieter moments as essential parts of the creative process, where resting and recharging can actually fuel our next burst of inspiration. So, if you're feeling a bit uninspired today, let’s give ourselves permission to just be and acknowledge that rest is just as crucial as creativity itself.

Takeaways:

  1. Creativity isn't always a constant; it has its ups and downs, and that's totally normal.
  2. It's perfectly okay to have days where you don't feel creative at all, so don't stress about it.
  3. Trusting the quiet moments can often lead to new ideas simmering beneath the surface.
  4. Resting and recharging is an essential part of the creative process, so embrace it.
  5. Don't force creativity; allow yourself to just be and take a break when needed.
  6. Remember to give yourself permission to not feel creative today and honor that space.

Speaker A:

Hey, this is.

Speaker A:

It's okay if bite sized permission slips.

Speaker A:

I'm Matt Gilhooley and today's permission.

Speaker A:

It's okay if you don't feel creative today.

Speaker A:

As someone who creates, whether it's podcasts, art, content, ideas, I've learned that creativity isn't just the switch that you can flip on demand.

Speaker A:

But somehow we expect ourselves to be on all the time to generate new ideas, to stay insp.

Speaker A:

To keep producing.

Speaker A:

And when the well feels dry, that self judgment shows up.

Speaker A:

You're slacking.

Speaker A:

What's wrong with you?

Speaker A:

Other people seem to be creating non stop.

Speaker A:

But here's the truth.

Speaker A:

Creativity has its seasons.

Speaker A:

Some days are blooming with ideas, some days are quiet.

Speaker A:

And both are valid.

Speaker A:

Both are part of the process.

Speaker A:

I've had stretches where the spark just wasn't there.

Speaker A:

And instead of forcing it, I've somehow learned to trust the quiet.

Speaker A:

Because often those quiet periods are when things are simmering just beneath the surface.

Speaker A:

Resting, recharging, making space for what's next.

Speaker A:

So if today you don't feel creative, that's okay.

Speaker A:

You don't have to force brilliance.

Speaker A:

You can just let yourself be.

Speaker A:

So if you're up for it, tell yourself, I give myself permission to not feel creative today.

Speaker A:

Rest is part of creating.

Speaker A:

That's your permission slip, friend.

Speaker A:

Tuck it in your pocket and I'll see you next time.
